Ben thinks he is going for a picnic with Elly, but Elly disappears and Ben finds himself having to follow a small Sasten man with webbed feet. With Marbig's help, Ben escapes drowning, quick sand and the strange kelp-like grobs. Ben learns that Elly is Queen of the Sastens, and they need his help when the Zoths come. In the face of decimation, by the Zoth army, Ben has a plan. Its success means that the peaceful, fish farming Sasten people are safe, but only for now.
