Research Foundation

AVEL follows Robert J. Marzano's Six Steps to Effective Vocabulary Instruction:

  1. The teacher gives a description, explanation, or example of the new word.
  2. The teacher asks the student to give a description, explanation, or example of the new word in his/her own words.
  3. The teacher asks the student to draw a pricture, symbol, or locate a graphic to represent the new word.
  4. The student participates in activities that provide more knowledge of the words.
  5. The student will discuss the word with other classmates.
  6. The student will participate in activities that provide more reinforement of the new word.

The Teacher Edition contains instruction for units 1-5 with scripting. The Teacher Edition provides an overview of the prgoram goals and research base. Read the Teacher Edition thoroughly before beginning implementation and reference it regularly to support daily instruction and to conduct assessments and interpret their results.

The Student Edition Workbook includes worksheets for all five AVEL units (20 weeks of lessons plus five unit reviews). These consumable workbooks provide a variety of daily activity lessons, written exercises, and unit reviews that focus on the four types of words taught in AVEL:
