Vale William Van Cleave

It is with great sadness that we pass on the news of the unexpected death of author and esteemed educator William Van Cleave.

William was an exceptional person - a highly regarded educator, speaker and author who has made a big impact on teachers around the world, helping them to improve the lives of many with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. An internationally recognised speaker with an interactive, hands-on presentation style, William presented on effective teaching practices at conferences and schools both in the United States and internationally (including Australia) since 1995. He is best known for his expertise in morphology and improving written expression, with his Writing Matters book and related materials being amongst Silvereye's most popular teaching resources ever since he spoke in Australia in 2016. In more recent times his tireless schedule of online training has introduced his unique style and infectious enthusiasm to many more Australian teachers.

We often talk of someone's death as a loss and of course they all are in some way, but William's untimely passing is a big loss as he still had many active years ahead of him. Years in which he would have enabled a lot more people to better help those who struggle at school. On a personal level he will be really missed - William was a lovely man - one of the best people I have met in my 13 years at Silvereye. In this time I have met many talented and highly knowledgeable people but I can’t think of anyone whose all round enthusiasm and genuine desire to do the right thing impressed me more.
