PISA results debunk 7 common educational myths

Monday 2nd March 2015

The man in charge of the PISA tests, Andreas Schleicher, says the evidence from around the world reveals some big myths about what makes for a successful education system in an article recently published on the BBC website. The 7 myths debunked are:

  • Disadvantaged pupils are doomed to do badly in school
  • Immigrants lower results
  • It's all about money
  • Smaller class sizes raise standards
  • Comprehensive systems for fairness, academic selection for higher results
  • The digital world needs new subjects and a wider curriculum
  • Success is about being born talented

This is a really interesting article and well worth a read. NB. PISA is the Programme for International Student Assessment which is commonly used to compare performances of school systems around the world.
