SPELD Professional Development Days

Wednesday 7th May 2014

SPELD NSW are hosting two really interesting events in the next couple of months, including a day with celebrated UK educator and author, Pie Corbett.

On 6th June 2014, SPELD are holding a PD day titled: Essential Knowledge for Teaching and Assessing Reading. The two speakers are:

  • Rhonda Filmer who is a regular speaker on learning disabilities, most particularly dyslexia and attention deficit disorder. Rhonda is an advocate for more effective teaching of reading, early identification of children who are gifted and/or have a learning disability and for improvement in the pre-service education and mentoring of beginning teachers to ensure they can teach using evidence-based practice and pedagogy.
  • Walter Howe: an educational & developmental psychologist with 30+ years experience and an expert on educational testing, including the Woodcock Johnson and YARC assessments. Wally is a regular presenter at professional conferences on topics ranging from dyslexia to emotional intelligence.

On 25th July 2014, SPELD are holding a PD day titled: Talk for Writing’ – Effective instruction in persuasive, informative and imaginative writing. This full day workshop will be presented by celebrated UK educator and author, Pie Corbett.

  • Pie Corbett has worked as a Primary School Head Teacher, a Senior Lecturer, a School Inspector and contributed to the English Primary and Secondary National Literacy Strategies in England. In 2011, Pie was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters for lifetime services to creative education, poetry and storytelling.  Having written and edited over 250 books, he works now on research and development projects with clusters of schools in disadvantaged areas to raise standards in writing and to bring about whole school transformation.
  • Pie is renowned for his practical, lively and inspiring training days and conferences. In England, he is affectionately known as the teachers' 'literacy guru'.  He writes poetry, tells stories and believes that no child should leave a primary school without being able to read and write effectively.

Silvereye has been a long-time supporter of SPELD NSW and have always found their events to be content rich and well organised. We encourage all teachers and anyone interested in helping children with learning difficulties to consider attending one of these professional development days.
