Workshop Summary

This two day workshop offers teachers an overview of the T4W approach and provides opportunities for hands-on participation in the steps of this exceptionally effective instructional approach. This is an evidence based intervention for teaching written expression.

The workshop addresses the use of T4W for both fiction and non-fiction texts and includes:

  • Talk for Writing (T4W) in action
  • Planning for a unit of work based on the instructional needs of students at a class or whole-school level;
  • Using the Three Is Imitation, Innovation and Invention as the basis of the T4W approach so students move from dependence to independence in a systematic, scaffolded way;
  • Providing effective feedback to students in order to promote skill development;
  • Assessing writing accurately to track student progress and guide teaching goals; and
  • Developing grammatical skills, through a functional application in writing, for example, warm-up games to meet the specific instructional needs of students.

Peta Collins is an educational psychologist at Dyslexia SPELD Foundation (DSF) Literacy and Clinical Services, WA. She assesses children, teenagers, and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities, and also consults with parents on appropriate evidence-based classroom and individual strategies to improve literacy skills.
